ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Kyla
WHERE I COME FROM
I have spent my entire life in Saskatoon. Born and raised here, this city is an integral part of who I am. I grew up in Montgomery and have rented in Haultain, Rosewood, Sutherland, and currently City Park. I went to high school at Bedford Road
Collegiate and attended the University of Saskatchewan. I am passionate about doing my part in fostering community. I look forward to learning from each of you as I get to know Ward 5 better throughout this election. If elected to be your City Councillor Ward 5, I promise to use everything I have learned throughout my career to serve you.
A THRIVING CAREER
For the past 18 years I have worked my way through the service industry. Starting as a Dishwasher at Earls I quickly worked my way up through the Line, Prep Cook and Baker roles until I switched restaurants and took on my first management position leading the kitchen at Hudsons Saskatoon.
After some time as an Assistant Kitchen Manager, I made the decision to head back to Earls. This time around I switched to Front of House - with the Head Chefs permisson of course. This time I worked my way through Server and Bartender roles until I became a Shift Lead.
At this point in my career restaurant work came with ease and afforded me job security because I had crossed trained myself across all roles. This made chosing to study at the University of Saskatchewan in my mid twenties feasible. At USASK I worked towards a History and Political Studies double major with a Biology Minor.
I worked primarily as a bartender and server throughout my studies. While my interest in politics in general very much comes from paying attention to politics, and elections with my mom throughout my teens, it was the daily small talk with so many different folks while bartending that really sparked my interest in representing people.
A few years into my studies I switched restaurants for a change of scenery. I became a Lounge Server and Bartender at Boston Pizza. I quickly became an Assistant Manager and transferred to another location where I worked as the Assistant General Manager for several years. I pride myself the development of my leadership during my time at Boston Pizza. While there I was able to create an environment where staff where able to thrive.
It is during this period of my career that I allowed my name to stand in two elections. First I made a bid at Ward 1 City Councillor in 2020. I came in a distant 4th learning the hard way that you cannot win an election without a campaign team. The following year the Federal NDP reached out to me asking if I would consider running to be their candidate in Saskatoon-Grasswood. I said yes, worked hard to win the nomination, and increased the NDP vote share by 4.6% receiving 13720 votes or 30.1%.
Since running in these elections I pivoted my restaurant career back to the kitchen when I took on the role of Sous Chef alongside Executive Chef Justin O'Reilly at Stoked Kitchen and Bar last summer. I really enjoyed refining my skills as a chef again while working in this role.
A short 6 months ago I left my position at Stoked with Chef O'Reilly to work witu Jackson, Mel, and Alisa Skalicky in opening their restaurant Loqui Restaurant & Bar in Saskatoon's beautiful Riversdale. While I was hired as their Executive Sous Chef, I very quickly became interested in lending my skills in helping the entire restaurant thrive as a whole. The Skalicky's chose to make me their General Manager and I have been beyond thrilled to take on that role for them. I developed the staff handbook, restaurant polices, and I manage day to day general operations. Working in an entirely locally owned business is amazing and makes the work I put into it every day feel that much more important.
Most recently I have chosen to allow my name to stand once again for you Saskatoon, this time in Ward 5. I would be honored put the skills I have developed to work for the communities within Ward 5.
Platform coming later this week.
